Extended Metaphors and Mike Daisey

Mike Daisey is a good writer. A REALLY GOOD WRITER.

His latest monologue uses his trip on the “Orient Express” as an allegory of his own journey to renewal.

I reviewed this world premiere of the monologue Wednesday night, but I must admit I walked in enthused to see the creation of such a piece and frustrated for my fellow audience members. On the Spoleto festival docket was Daisey’s show “Teching in India” and it was nearly sold out. When he announced he would be replacing that with a vaguely explained new piece about his trip through Europe and other things on his mind, a plethora of seats opened up – people wanted to see India.

And with tickets at $32 a pop at a world-renowed festival, he owed his audience something good. That being said, here’s my review, with a video discussion to follow between myself and Andrew Johnson (who previewed both of Daisey’s shows).

Reivew.
